Why Your Heat Pump Matters

Heat pumps transfer warm air from outside to heat your home in winter. The process is reversed to transfer cold air from outside so your home stays comfortable and cool during the summer. Because heat pumps transfer warm air rather than create it like furnaces do, they can run at up to an amazing 400% energy-efficiency rate. Yup, you heard that right: 400%!

Ours was a tag-team effort. We had water collecting on the floor of our mechanical room. Note the pictures of our nightmare of how the furnace, humidifier, elements of the AC with the water heater crammed in for good measure. The water shut off valves required Houdini skills to access. Genzryan sent Eulises out on Wednesday who investigated the source of the leak. Determined it was from a joint behind and near the bottom of the water heater. Basically not where it could be accessed. Eulises checked every other possibilities and documented the dilemma since there is no access to the rear of the water heater. He was thorough in his recommendations which required a plumber to make the repair but also create an access panel through the garage wall to make the repair. Jack drew the short straw. Jack had been out previously for a repair on our kitchen faucet. Jack already reviewed Eulises’ photos and set to work creating an access panel, repairing our leak and relocating the shut off valves for better accessibility. We are so thankful for the work and time of Ralph and Jack to not only repair the leak but in solving the contortions to turning off the outside faucets in the winter.

I had the pleasure of working with Allen with Gens-Ryan when he came to look at the issue in my air duct, and I couldn’t be more impressed. He was prompt, professional, and incredibly knowledgeable.
Allen did a great job diagnosing our extreme condensation on the air duct issue. Clearly explained and demonstrated the problem. Took the time to answer all my questions and was helpful in talking through options. I have seen many a service technician come in, take care of the "basic" and out in no time. This is not how Allen works. Not only is he meticulous about how he does his inspections, using every piece of equipment in his arsenal, he took the time to explain to me what he was doing, why he was doing it. I highly recommend Gens-Ryan Heating, Cooling, Plumbing, & Electrical

Frequently Asked Questions

See All FAQs

Is a heat pump more energy-efficient than a furnace and AC?

Yes. Because they transfer cool and warm air rather than create it, heat pumps are more energy-efficient than furnaces and air conditioners. This can lead to significant savings on your energy bills.

Do I need a furnace with a head pump?

Twin Cities winters are very cold, which can sometimes reduce the efficiency of heat pumps. To solve this issue, consider a hybrid system, which combines a heat pump with a gas furnace. Homeowners with a hybrid comfort system use their heat pump for most heating and cooling needs and then switch to their furnace when temperatures dip well below freezing.

What happens if your heat pump’s reversing valve is stuck?

Reversing valves can become stuck if they’re damaged, frozen, or have debris or dirt buildup. An HVAC technician can diagnose the problem and provide the right solution.

How often should you maintain a heat pump?

Plan on scheduling a heat pump maintenance appointment at least twice each year — once before the heating season and once before the cooling season.

Do heat pumps and mini-splits work when it gets really cold?

A heat pump or ductless mini-split system will still work to heat your home as temperatures reach freezing, but they start to lose efficiency and need to work harder to provide the same level of heat. Below freezing, you’ll see efficiency the same as or worse than a furnace, and as the temperature lowers, the furnace will pull ahead substantially. Of course, a heat pump is as much as 3 to 4 times as efficient as a furnace during optimal temperatures, so it’s still a great investment for efficiency!
