Repair Or Replace HVAC

HVAC Unit - Repair or Replace?

Should I Repair or Replace My HVAC Unit?

Is your HVAC system lagging behind and not keeping your family as warm or comfortable as it used to? Or have you noticed that your energy bill seems higher than it has been in the past? If either answer is “yes”, the next question might be “Is it time to repair or replace?” followed by “which do I need to do?”

Understanding the different scenarios might help lead you to the answer you need.

Repair HVAC

Repairs are obviously cheaper than a replacement system, but if you’re constantly doing repairs, your costs could be adding up. Some technicians recommend the 5,000 rule. Take the age of your equipment and multiply that by the cost of repairs. If the number is more than $5,000, you should consider replacing it.

Using the formula above, if a 10-year-old unit requires a $350 repair, that’s $3,500, which – under the “5,000 rule” – means repairing it makes good financial sense.

Another rule of thumb: if your unit is less than 15 years old, with no obvious hazards or malfunctions, you should be just fine investing in a repair.

Replace HVAC

If you have an older system, especially one that has you shelling out, yet again, for another repair, it makes more financial sense to replace. More often than not, replacing can be less expensive than the repairs you’ve had to do combined.

If your system is more than 15 years old, then it’s probably not very efficient either. Replacing it with a new model can ensure you won’t need repairs for a while, and you’ll be able to save money on your heating and cooling bills with a more efficient unit.
